Tikkurila Anti-Reflex 2 Review Mike Cupit
Tikkurila Anti-Reflex 2 rating
Antireflex is a very matt emulsion. It is mainly used in white on ceilings and is ideal for areas with lots of natural light. I hope you enjoy my Tikkurila Anti-Reflex 2 review
Tikkurila Anti-Reflex 2 is a strange product
I’ll be honest, this product takes some getting used to. Let’s start with opacity or, as some decorators mistakenly call it, “cover”. If you’re hoping to get away with a layer over an existing white emulsion, think again !! Even if you’re repainting a ceiling that’s already a solid white, you’ll need to apply two full coats of Tikkurila Anti-Reflex to achieve the finish you want. It’s strange too, you can spray three coats of anti-reflective on a ceiling or wall until they set. Then if you go all the pig and apply an extra layer with a brush and roller, does it no longer look solid? ! How does that happen ?! It takes two coats to cover something that’s already covered ??? Witchcraft you ask me! Black magic right there !! The most important tip I could give you, keep it up !! Hell, it’s cheap enough. Load the brush and use a long stacking roller. Do it with a spade if you can!
Let’s look at some of the problems with many white emulsions, especially when coating large, photosensitive blankets. That’s right, picture frames and roller marks … And I know what you’re going to say, “A good decorator can get a good finish on anything”. You’re probably right, but that’s because a good decorator can spot a trap before it occurs and work to avoid it. Believe me when I say I’ve used a lot of different products and nothing I’ve tried avoiding picture frames and Tikkurila anti-reflective. Antireflective leaves a very matte finish and since it doesn’t reflect a lot of light it hides a multitude of sins. I would go a little further to be honest, I know Mrs. Jones has it on her mind that her kitchen ceiling longs for a “BRILLIANT WHITE FINISH”, but she’s wrong! The anti-reflective coating may be dull, but it leaves a rich, luxurious finish, just what Mrs. Jones SHOULD be using on her kitchen ceiling.
Did someone say KITCHEN Ceiling?
Well, and here’s another reason Mrs. Jones should use a piece of old tikkurila on her kitchen ceiling … Because it’s a durable mat !! Yes, a contract mat that is also suitable as a long-lasting !! Don’t get too carried away scrubbing this stuff, it will leave shiny traces of fabric in an otherwise dull sea. However, you get a fully waterproof coating that is resistant to unpleasant grease, steam, and other pollutants. I have no qualms about using this CONTRACT MAT in a bathroom or kitchen.
I love to spray, I do loads of it. It’s all well until you spray a large, poorly plastered ceiling. You must have had it, your finish is as smooth as glass but you still get shadows due to the unevenness of the plating work which makes it look blotchy. Or worse, your tip is on the way out and you get leads! Believe me when I say there’s nothing quite like an anti-reflective spray !! More when spraying than with a brush and roller because you are not that affected by the opacity! After all, it only takes 5 minutes to throw an extra coat on the ceiling once you have all the ribbons undone. Traces are hidden (not that I suffer from such a fate) and shadowing is minimal. As mentioned above, Tikkurila Antireflex can be used as a fog AND a top coat. So juice your first coat and you can spray on two more top coats right away. You have the perfect finish by the time you start your brew.
Well, you get what you basically pay for! We’re talking about a long-lasting emulsion that works and looks better than anything else on the market. I go through tons of stuff !! I buy twenty buckets at a time, maybe once a month, and it’s pretty much all I use for blankets and even mist coatings. I can see why it was voted the best emulsion for ceilings in Decorators Forum UK. You can now buy Tikkurila Anti-Reflex online from the Tikkurila website
What do other decorators think?
Tikkurila Anti-Reflex is the best white matt emulsion for ceilings from a country mile !! It doesn’t go very far and you always have to apply a second coat, but the finish is fantastic !! No roller tracks or picture frames. You’re now tinting it too light colors so you can even use it as a regular emulsion on walls, though Optiva 3 is pretty hard to beat.
Tikkurila Anti Reflex is good stuff. The only color I’ve found that beats it on large ceilings is Johnstone’s Perfect Mat, but that’s twice the price and up !! I use Tikkurila in almost every job now.
Yes, it’s good, but the opacity drops it a little. It doesn’t go very far either, and while it’s cheap, you end up buying more of it. I still rate Anti-Reflex, but it’s not as good as some decorators make out.
