Some of the Lincoln pubs and bars that will reopen for the first time after May 17
Many pubs and bars in the Lincoln area will reopen for the first time next week if restrictions are further eased.
Although the pubs have been able to reopen outdoors since last month, some have remained closed due to concerns about the profitability of the outdoor service, the inability to invest in a beer garden due to the pandemic, or the lack of outdoor space.
Lincoln area pubs like Magna Carta and The Cardinal’s Hat will reopen for the first time in more than four months on May 17th.
Lincolnshire Live has spoken to some of those who run pubs that are still closed to see how they feel about the final reopening and their hopes for the coming summer.
Jon Kempton, Bar Manager at BeerHeadZ Lincoln in Eastgate, said, “The entire BeerHeadZ team anticipated and counted down the days to our reopening.
“We know that, from a YouGov poll conducted last month, the British were most excited about going to the pub, eating out, getting their hair cut and shopping when the restrictions eased.
“Since the reopening of outdoor hospitality on April 12th, customers have had to deal with the unpredictable weather when enjoying a drink or meal outdoors.
“The reopening of indoor hospitality is another big boost, especially for a company like ours, as we, along with many other pubs, don’t have a beer garden.
“I think customers are eager to reconnect indoors where the weather doesn’t matter. I know I’m speaking for the entire team when I say we’re most excited to see our loyal customers again . “
Also in town is The Cardinal’s Hat on High Street.
A spokesman here said: “We’re also opening May 17th and expect to be busy.
“Just trading outdoors didn’t justify keeping the business open for us, so we really look forward to anything.”
Further up High Street towards the city center is The Tiny Tavern – one of the smaller drinking spots in town.
Co-owner Emma Chapman told Lincolnshire Live, “When we first opened in March last year, we were open five days before we closed.
“Because of this, we’re digging a little bit into things this time, so we’ll wait until May 20th to open our doors.
“With some restrictions, the pub is very labor-intensive, so we have reduced our capacity and opening times to Thursday through Sunday.
“We were a really new business when the pandemic broke out so we had no chance to invest in our beer garden or anything. We felt it was too risky to open before next week.”
The Magna Carta Pub in Exchequergate, Lincoln, is also preparing to reopen next week.
A spokesperson added, “We’re reopening on May 17th and can’t wait to see all of your beautiful faces. We’re now taking bookings
“We’re going to be running the same system as before, taking bookings but also leaving some tables free so people can go in and use them.
“We want to wait until our regular guests are here again.”
The Walkabout bar in Lincoln, also on High Street, will reopen May 17th.
A statement on social media said: “We are very excited to announce that we will reopen on May 17th.
“Make your booking on our website.”
Also on the High Street is The Strugglers Inn – a pub built in 1841.
According to the restrictions, the pub will reopen to customers for the first time since the beginning of next year.
The pub has advised customers that booking is not essential. However, it is recommended to avoid disappointment.
