Crown is turning back the hands of time with the renovation of the Cardiff Clock Tower

A number of products from Crown Paints’ portfolio of professional brands were used to transform Cardiff’s iconic 1915 Roath Park Clock Tower.

Crown Specification Team members worked closely with Cardiff City Council and professional painter JJ Williams (Painting Services) Ltd to develop an affordable, high performance paint specification for the renovation of the iconic clock tower. The clock tower was originally created as a memorial to Captain Robert Scott and his companions who set sail from Cardiff in 1910 on their unfortunate voyage to Antarctica. It has become a popular and recognizable part of the city’s heritage and stands proudly in the middle of Roath Park Lake.

The landmark renovation, which took approximately four weeks, used a variety of products from Crown’s extensive portfolio of professional brands, with Sandtex Trade 365 smooth wall paint and Sandtex Trade X-Treme X-Posure® for repainting the main areas of the bell tower. Water-based masonry paint X-Treme X-Posure® was specially developed for use in even the harshest weather conditions and combines an attractive, smooth matt finish with protection for up to 20 years from the elements and, due to its location on the lake, is the ideal product for the bell tower.

The exterior woodwork of the bell tower was freshened up with Sadolin Beautiflex® Solvent Opaque Woodstain with a flexible coating to protect against the elements and water. Its microporous formulation flexes with the substrate to resist cracking, chipping and peeling, making it a permanent solution for the iconic bell tower.

Crown Trade Full Undercoat was used on the bell tower prior to overpainting and the renovation was completed with Crown Trade Full Gloss.

JJ Williams General Manager Graham Thomas said, “It has been a privilege to be involved in the renovation of such an iconic structure and to help Andy Temple pay tribute to both his wife and mother. As we got closer to the surface, we found that the bell tower was in worse shape than initially thought, and that it needed thorough cleaning and some surface repairs.

“We are very grateful to Crown Paints for the donation and have found that all coatings used to be easy to work with and had excellent coverage and opacity. We are very happy with the end result and hope everyone who visits the lake is just as happy! “

Jamie Williams, Crown Paints Specifications Sales Director, added, “The bell tower in Cardiff’s Roath Park is not only an icon of the local landscape, but also holds a special place within the community and heritage of the city. We are proud to have been selected to provide specification support and products for the tower renovation and we are delighted with such a fantastic result. ”
