Bostwick beats Cowley as Burton Albion do Lincoln City play-off favour

Michael Bostwick beat Danny Cowley when Burton Albion did Lincoln City a huge favor with a 2-1 win at Fratton Park.

Bostwick – a key player for the Imps among the Cowleys – played the 90 minutes when the Brewers finished his former manager’s perfect start as Pompey head coach.

Mike Fondop and Josh Powell scored both sides of the half as Burton, who hosted the Imps on April 20, brought more daylight between them and the relegation zone.

Charlie Daniels pulled back a goal for Pompey late.

The result left Portsmouth in fifth place, one point and one place above Lincoln and two points above seventh Charlton Athletic – another of the Imps’ remaining opponents – who won 2-1 at automatic promotion candidate Sunderland.

“The overriding emotion is frustration,” said Cowley after the game. “We conceded a really soft first goal, and when you do that against a team like Burton, you make it really difficult for yourself.

“We didn’t have the execution in the last third and we had a lot of chances. We forced it a little and we lacked movement.

“We only had three attacking older players fit and that didn’t help us.

“I didn’t think the first two would be available to us before today. We won four games so we need to soak up today’s disappointment. “

Alex Gilbey made it 2-0 on the hour, with Scowen’s belated header into the right net of Sunderland as little consolation as Charlton kept pressure on Blackpool, Lincoln and Portsmouth in the race for the play-offs.
