Apprentices Go Head to Head
At the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) competition events, trainees have stepped into the limelight to demonstrate their painting and decorating skills.
The Apprentice / Trainee of the Year and Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year competitions took place at four different college events across the UK.
The winners of both competitions will be announced at PDA industry events later this year.
Apprentice / Apprentice of the Year contestants were faced with a precision painting challenge sponsored by Johnstone’s Trade Paint, Purdy Professional Painting Tools and CITB, with three regional preliminaries open to apprentices across the UK.
Competitive events were held at Coventry College, Bournemouth and Poole College and Leeds College of Building.
The finalists for the Apprentice / Trainee of the Year will be invited to the PDA’s Premier Trophy Awards to be held on September 16 at Plaisterers’ Hall, London.
The Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year event was a six-hour competition sponsored by Brewers Decorator Centers and held at The Hub in Doncaster.
The participants each had to face a six-hour wallpapering challenge.
The winners of the Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year will be announced on November 19th and 20th at a gala dinner as part of the PDA’s National Networking Event at the Liverpool Hilton Hotel.
PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie, served as a judge on all four competition events.
At the Paperhanger competition he was accompanied by former PDA national president and member of the association’s board of directors, Stuart Yates, while Andrew Davis of the Association of Painting Craft Teachers (APCT) attended the three regional apprenticeship races of the year.
